Whenever luxury sheets are mentioned, many people automatically think of silk sheets. While there is no question in most people’s minds that silk linen really does fall into the luxury class, you can find comparable sheets made from other materials as well. In fact, high quality Egyptian cotton sheets can be considered more luxurious than many of the cheaper silk sheets you can buy.
So, what is it that makes a sheet a luxury bed sheet? To most people it is the feel of the sheet against the skin, the weave of the sheet and the way that it folds against the bed. That is why sheets made from silk are so popular; they feel absolutely great against the skin. Silk feels smooth and soft, it is cool to the touch yet it warms up when in contact with body heat. However, not all silk linen can necessary be considered luxury bed sheets.
When gauging the quality of a cotton sheet, normally you will judge it according to the thread count, with higher counts generally being softer and of much better quality. You may be wondering what thread count is; basically it is the number of vertical and horizontal threads in a one inch square of cotton fabric. Another thing that affects the quality of cotton is the thickness of the thread that is used. The finer the thread, the more smooth and soft the fabric. Both of these factors should be taken into consideration when buying cotton sheets, not the count alone. A luxury quality Egyptian cotton sheet could have a thread count of up to 1200 for example. A sheet of that quality will almost feel as soft and luxurious as one made from silk.
Silk sheets also base their quality on thread count to some extent. However, they also use another gauge: momme weight. Momme weight refers directly to how much silk weighs. Luxury sheets made from silk should have a momme weight of sixteen to nineteen, and a count of over 400. Keeping these figures in mind will give you something to go by when judging the quality of sheets.
It is important to remember that luxury sheet sets should look great and feel comfortable when against your skin. Cotton remains the most popular choice when it comes to bed linens because they allow your skin to breathe, absorb moisture and feel soft and comfortable. True luxury bedding is perhaps in the eye of the beholder. Luxury flannel sheets can be every bit as welcoming as luxury silk sheets, especially on a cold evening.
